Senior soccer player Christina Paik has been named the first St. Catherine University Athlete of the Week for the 2012 season thanks to her stellar four-goal performance this weekend. She also earned
MIAC Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week honors for her stellar performance.
The soccer team opened up its 2012 campaign with a 7-1 win over UW-Superior on Friday and a 2-1 double-overtime win on Saturday, and Paik was instrumental in both victories for the Wildcats. In the first contest on Friday, Paik scored the Wildcats first goal of the season just 39 seconds into the game. From there, the Wildcats went on a scoring surge, which included the seventh and final goal on thed ay which came off the foot of Paik.
After a huge performance on Friday, Paik continued to lead the Wildcats on Saturday as she scored the first goal of the game early in a tight contest against Jamestown College. Heading into the final minutes of the game, it appeared that St. Kate's would narrowly escape with a 1-0 win, but the Jimmies scored with just over a minute remaining to tie the game at 1-1 and force overtime. Paik's biggest contribution of the weekend came with just over three minutes remaining in the second overtime period when she beat the Jamestown goalkeeper one-on-one off a pass from Ellen Kokes to end the game and seal the Wildcats' second-straight victory.
Paik finished the weekend atop the conference in goals (4) and points (8) in just two games. Paik and the Wildcats hope to continue their winning ways as they take on Central College on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m., in Pella, Iowa.
