Results MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The schedule has not been easy for the St. Catherine University tennis team lately. Sunday evening's match may have been one of the Wildcats biggest challenges of the season, as they hosted the University of St. Thomas at the U of M Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Unfortunately, the Wildcats fell to the Tommies 9-0 after a hard fought match.
St. Kate's found itself in a 3-0 after doubles play against St. Thomas. Both No. 3 doubles team
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) and
Ruth Rike (Pine City, Minn. / Pine City) and No. 2 doubles team
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and Jess Duda (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville) lost by a score of 8-1 in their respective doubles match. No. 1 doubles team of Mikinee Salo (Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd) and
Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, Minn. / Mitchell) fought tooth and nail against St. Thomas' No. 1 team of Brook Noack and Shelby Henderson before falling 8-6 in the final sets.
The Wildcats were just as competitive in singles play. Salo managed to take the opening set from Noack and push the No. 16 singles player in the Central Region to a tiebreaker before falling 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. The rest of the St. Kate's players all fell in straight sets. At the No. 2 spot, Knoll lost 6-3, 6-2 to Henderson while Lorenzen fell 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 singles spot. Duda challenged Jenna Zimmerman in the No. 4 singles spot before falling 6-4, 6-1; and No. 5 singles player Sporer and No. 6
Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) fell in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0.
The Wildcats now fall to 4-3 overall on the season and 1-2 in MIAC play. They face one more conference opponent in Saint Mary's next Friday at 6 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center before heading off for Spring Break competition in Orlando, Florida.
