The St. Kate’s hockey team won an overtime thriller 1-0 against Bethel University Saturday night at Ridder Arena. It is the Wildcats’ fourth win in their last five games.
The game-winning goal came just 56 seconds into overtime when Cassie Rooney put in a quick shot from Michaela Michaelson and Katie Lawler.
Goaltenders for both teams showed great defense to force overtime, with St. Kate’s Mel Gerten making a handful of memorable saves to keep the Royals off of the scoreboard. Gerten finished with 21 saves.
Head Coach Brad Marshall said “It was just a great college hockey game. We’re very happy we won, it’s just too bad Bethel comes out with no points as it truly could have went either way with how well both teams played.”
The win keeps the Wildcats in second place in the MIAC, one point behind St. Thomas for the lead. St. Kate’s now as a record of 9-3-0 in the conference and an overall record of 13-4-0.
The next two weekends hold key MIAC matchups for the Wildcats. Next weekend St. Kate’s travels to Concordia for a pair of games. On Friday, February 19th they play at St. Thomas. The following night they host St. Thomas at 7:30 pm at Ridder Arena.
