In their final regular season game, the St. Kate's hockey team beat host College of St. Benedict 3-2 in overtime Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Wildcats’ record to 13-3-2 in the MIAC, giving them the #2 seed entering the MIAC Playoffs, hosting #3 St. Thomas on Thursday, March 4th.
St. Kate’s got on the scoreboard first when Aryn Ball took advantage of a power play, putting in a goal from Kayla Clafton and Bridget Braastad at 14:00 in the first period.
Michaela Michaelson put the Wildcats up 2-0 at 10:40 in second period off of a pass from Cassie Rooney. But CSB scored a goal of their own at 14:43, putting the score at 2-1 to start the third period.
With 51 seconds remaining in the game, the Blazers were able to even the score to force overtime.
The Wildcats came away with the win when at 1:59 in overtime Katie Lawler scored a power play goal, fed from Michaelson and Rooney.
Head Coach Brad Marshall said, “It was a great hockey game. St. Ben’s had an excellent play at the end of the third period to force overtime. We’re glad to come away with the win and will focus on our playoff game on Thursday.”
St. Kate’s held a 50-34 advantage in shots and a 50-28 advantage in faceoffs. Goaltender Mel Gerten recorded 34 saves on the night, 18 in the third period.
The Wildcats will now host St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoffs on Thursday, March 4th. Time and place will be announced shortly.
