In their final regular season home game, the Wildcat hockey team extended their winning ways with a
3-1 victory over St. Benedict at the VMCC in Inver Grove Heights. St. Kate’s is now 7-1-2 in their last 10 games.
Kelsey Abrahamson put St. Kate’s on the board in the first period, putting in a shot off of a face-off won by Michaela Michaelson at 16:21. In the second period the duo attacked again, this time Abrahamson feeding Michaelson, who put in the short-handed goal at 13:01 to take a 2-0 lead.
St. Kate’s went up 3-0 at 10:11 in the third period when Ashley Tilton scored a goal from Katie Lawler and Jessica Feltes. The Blazers added a goal of their own just under two minutes later, but it was not enough as the Wildcat’s defense, led by goaltender Mel Gerten, shut down St. Benedict in the remaining minutes.
“Tonight we played some good hockey at times” said head coach Brad Marshall, “In the end it was enough for a win. Playing at the VMCC in Inver Grove Heights was a nice homecoming for our four girls from Simley. We’ll take the win and get ready for tomorrow.”
The Wildcats recorded 34 shots on goal, while St. Benedict had 17. They also held a 40-14 face-off advantage over the Blazers.
The win improves St. Kate’s record to 12-3-2 in the MIAC (2nd Place), 16-4-2 overall.
Saturday, February 27th the Wildcats travel to St. Cloud to play St. Benedict at 2:00 pm.
