When Rufsvold arrived at St. Catherine as an assistant coach in 2000, the Wildcats had just finished a 1-21 season. In just a short time, Rufsvold helped turn the program around. The Wildcats also led the conference in scoring that year, averaging 72.5 points per game.

During his tenure, Rufsvold led the Wildcats to their first MIAC playoff win and semi-final appearance in 2008-09. The Wildcats boasted the MIAC individual scoring champion, Laura Kalbfell, in that same season. Rufsvold's players have earned seven All-MIAC and four All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors during his time as head coach. He has also been integral in developing the junior varsity basketball program at St. Catherine.

Prior to his arrival at St. Catherine, Rufsvold coached the boys high school basketball team at the Academy of Holy Angels for 25 years. While at Holy Angels, Rufsvold amassed an impressive 330 career wins, won three conference championships and advanced to the regional finals seven times. He also coached several athletes who played at all levels of collegiate basketball and one who went on to play in the NBA.

In addition to his coaching duties at Holy Angels, Rufsvold also served as the Director of Athletics from 1972-2002 and is a member of the Holy Angels Athletic Hall of Fame.
