ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University basketball team weathered a wild final minute holding on for a 53-50 MIAC road win Saturday afternoon at historic Hutton Arena.
St. Kate's led 25–20 at halftime, then endured a tough third quarter, scoring just four points, as Hamline edged in front 30–29 entering the fourth. The Wildcats responded with their best stretch of the day in the final 10 minutes, outscoring the Pipers 24–20 and making enough plays at the line to finish it.
St. Kate's opened with energy and built an early cushion behind paint touches and transition chances, taking an 18–12 lead after one. After falling behind late in the third, the Wildcats reclaimed momentum early in the fourth — including a go-ahead three from
Kristen Oberle and another triple from
Hattie Fox during a key run. Hamline drilled a three with six seconds left to cut it to 51–49. Fox answered immediately, sinking two free throws with four seconds remaining to push the lead back to four. The Pipers scored one at the horn, but St. Kate's escaped with the 53–50 win.
Sophomore
Jordyn Peed led with 16 points, five rebounds, and two blocks while junior
Hattie Fox delivered a double-double and near perfect performance shooting 100 percent from the line.
Kate Flicek went 3 for 4 from the stripe and hit a big three for six points.
Kristen Oberle forced three turnovers with three steals and three points. St. Kate's finished 16-for-19 at the free throw line and forced 22 Hamline turnovers, helping offset a turnover-heavy day on offense.
St. Kate's travels to Winona on Wednesday for a rematch against the Cardinals from Saint Mary's University. They return to
Butler Center on Saturday, February 7 for a 1 pm game to honor senior,
Kristen Oberle.
