WAVERLY, Iowa -- The St. Catherine University softball team dropped two games to non-conference foe, Wartburg College in Waverly. St. Kate's sits at 7-7 on the season they're set to open the MIAC season this week.Â
GAME ONE | Wartburg 8, St. Kate's 2
St. Catherine came out strong, striking first as Helen McKinnon singled, stole second, and scored on a Maren Ceyonwa RBI single in the opening inning. The Wildcats kept pressure on Wartburg early, collecting three hits in the first, but the Knights answered with a two-run homer to take the lead. Despite solid defensive play, St. Kate's found itself trailing 3-1 after three innings.
The Wildcats continued to fight, capitalizing on a defensive miscue in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-2. McKinnon remained a spark, reaching base twice and adding another stolen base, but Wartburg's offense proved tough to contain, with a pair of home runs keeping them ahead. St. Catherine's defense settled in late, shutting down the Knights in the final two innings, but the early deficit was too much to overcome as Wartburg secured the 8-2 win.Â
GAME TWO | Wartburg 10, St. Kate's 4
St. Catherine came out swinging, striking first with a string of hits in the opening inning as Sam Aronson, Grace Swigart, and Faith Bonse loaded the bases before Ceyonwa brought in the first run. The Wildcats kept battling, with Lucy Mansell's RBI single in the second tying the game at 2-2. Annie Cook and Ann Swigart sparked a rally in the fourth, combining for a pair of hits before Alexa Carlstrom's RBI single and a defensive miscue helped St. Catherine pull within three. McKinnon's groundout brought home another run, cutting the deficit to 7-4 and keeping the Wildcats in the fight.
St. Catherine's defense held strong, with Taylor Graf shutting down Wartburg in the third and fourth innings, while the Wildcats looked for another offensive push. Though the bats quieted late, Sam Aronson and Lucy Mansell added key hits in the seventh in a final effort. Despite their resilience, the Wildcats fell 10-4 but showed grit throughout.
Rookie Hannah Bernier started game one pitching three innings before Alexa Carlstrom finished the final three innings striking out three. Sarah Chirsty took the loss in game two giving up seven earned runs with one strikeout. Taylor Graf finished the final 4.1 innings tallying six strikeouts allowed three runs off four hits.Â
Next up for the Wildcats is another non-conference road game traveling to Wis.-Eau Claire on Saturday, March 29 before their MIAC and home opener scheduled for Sunday, March 30 against Saint Mary's University.Â
