MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Within 48 hours, the Wildcats faced off against two very hot MIAC teams. Thursday, they cooled off the Bennies and ended that team's six game win streak. Saturday, they played against Concordia who had won their last four games and had recently defeated the number 6 team in the country (Amherst). The Wildcats were not intimidated.
Sam Orth scored on the opening possession, and by the time Kylee Miron finished her coast-to-coast drive with 3:38 on the clock, St. Kate's was up 13-3. Both teams played with impressive energy and stingy defense. But St. Kate's was converting down low: they had 16 points in the paint in the first half, including 6 coming from
Karis Zezza layups. The Cobbers gradually battled their way back into it, and when Carlee Sieben hit a three with 1:30 left in the half, they took their first lead of the game 23-22.
Emme Golembiewski answered with a layup to put St. Kate's back up by 1, which is how things stood at the break.
Things went back and forth in the third: there were multiple lead changes, and neither team led by more than 3 points. At the start of the fourth, Concordia led 40-39. In the opening minute,
Bree Glynn's three-point play gave St. Kate's a lead they would grip tightly until the happy end. On the next possession,
Sam Orth caught fire, sparked by her steal and subsequent put-back basket. She scored each of the next two trips down the floor to give the Wildcats a 48-42 lead. A corner three from
Sydney Elliott gave St. Kate's some breathing room. A layup from
Bree Glynn and good free throws from
Kaylee Miron (6 of 6 from the line for the game) and
Rachel Randleman finished things off.
Overall,
Sam Orth scored 16 and had 8 rebounds to go with 2 steals and a block.
Greta Schimnowski had 9 points (4 of 4 from the line) and 4 boards.
Kaylee Miron contributed 8 points.
Bree Glynn and
Emme Golembiewski each had 6 rebounds.
The Wildcats return home to face Bethel on Monday, the 9
th at 7 pm.
