ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Wildcats improved to 10-6 in conference play with a convincing win over the Scots. As usual, St. Kate's defense brought lots of energy: they swiped 13 steals and tallied 27 points off of the 20 turnovers they generated. The offense clicked too and was credited with 13 assists:
Karis Zezza and
Kaylee Miron dropped dimes to post players while
Sam Orth and
Bree Glynn anticipated each other's moves to the basket beautifully. The shooting star of the night was
Greta Schimnowski who hit 6 of her 7 three-point attempts to record 18 points for the game.
The Scots jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the game, but the Wildcats remained composed. When Greta Schimnowski put in her second three of the game, it put the Wildcats up by a point. Mac answered with a bucket of their own, but St. Kate's finished the quarter with a 13-0 run to make the score 21-9. The second quarter started well for the Wildcats also, as shots continued to fall. After Bree Glynn hit a pair of free throws, St. Kate's led 36-13. But then Mac made some nice defensive stops and got hot on the other end of the court, putting together a 10-0 run to make it 36-23. The Wildcats regrouped, and when Greta Schimnowski finished the quarter with back-to-back threes, St Kate's took a 44-23 lead into the visitor's locker room at the half.
The second half started with seniors Sam Orth and Bree Glynn each scoring baskets from down low. A pair of Zezza free throws midway through the quarter made it 56-25. Maddie young scored 7 points in the last 3 minutes of the third, and an Anna Jordt layup gave the Wildcats a 70-35 lead at the quarter's end. The Scots' Peyton Starks showed why she is the conference's leading scorer, as she kept attacking the basket and converting; she finished the game with 25 points. But the three three-pointers that St. Kate's hit in the final quarter (they were 53% from distance for the game), were more than enough.
Next up, the Wildcats host Carleton at the Butler Center Wednesday night at 7 pm
