Wildcats shutout Cobbers 3-0 on Saturday

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The St. Catherine hockey team picked up their first shutout of the season with first-year Elizabeth Kubicek in net on Saturday. The Wildcats topped the Concordia College Cobbers 3-0 for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series split. Kubicek earned her second win of the season and second career shutout against the Cobbers making 32 saves.

Rookie Nicole Maddox found the back of the net first at Moorhead Sports Center scoring a short handed goal unassisted at 11:19. Maddox's goal is her fifth this season and first against a conference opponent, giving St. Catherine a one-goal lead halfway through the opening period.

The Wildcats' second goal was scored by rookie Marie Reimer who now has six goals on the season. Reimer had help from fellow rookie Lindsey Hays and sophomore Sophia Gorski. Hays now is tied for the top-spot on the team with seven assists this season and tied for eighth in the MIAC. Gorski now has five assists on the season and in a three-way tie at third on the team.

After gaining a two-goal lead just before the end of first period, St. Catherine and Concordia were scoreless through the entire second period and much of the third. Gorski scored an empty net goal on a pass from rookie Hannah Affolter with a 1:30 to play to seal the win.

Gorski is tied with Reimer at six goals and five assists for 11 points in the No. 3 spot. They are also tied with rookie Laura Denchfield at 11 points who scored the Wildcats' lone goal in game one of the conference series.

St. Catherine is home Friday, January 24 hosting St. Olaf College at 7 pm.
