Second period flourish leads to 4-2 win over Saint Ben's

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – As Ursula once said in Disney's The Little Mermaid, "The boss is on a roll".

In this case, the boss happens to be the St. Catherine University hockey team.

After a disappointing loss to UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday, the Wildcats rebounded in the best way possible, earning their fourth Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win in five games. Thanks to a barrage of goals in the second period, St. Kate's defeated the College of Saint Benedict 4-2 in the series opener Friday night.

After a relatively neutral first period, it looked like the Wildcats and Blazers were going to head to the locker room deadlocked in a 0-0 draw. However, St. Kate's forced a Saint Ben's turnover at center ice with 30 seconds remaining in the period. The Wildcats skated the puck up the ice, setting up one last play in the final seconds for Brede Postier (Byron, Minn. / Dodge County). The junior transfer didn't miss her shot, as she booted the puck past Julie Carle to give St. Kate's a 1-0 lead with 18 seconds remaining in the first period.

Postier's late first period goal gave the Wildcats the boost they needed in the second, as St. Kate's went on to score three goals to take a 4-0 lead over the Blazers. Emilee Anderson (Chanhassen, Minn. / Chanhassen) scored her seventh goal of the season at 5:09 in the second period to boost the Wildcats lead to 2-0 over Saint Ben's. Seven minutes later, Morgan Tentis (Victoria, Minn. / Chanhassen) ended her scoring drought to extend the lead to 3-0 before Tori Thompson's (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall) one-timer on the power play gave St. Kate's a comfortable 4-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the second period.

The Blazers managed to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard and score two goals of their own in the third period, but the damage was already done as St. Kate's went on to win by a final score of 4-2. Thompson was the lone player to have a hand in all four Wildcat goals, as she tallied three assists and a goal Friday evening.

Bryce Boreen (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Park-Cottage Grove) earned her second win of the season Friday night, as she faced 31 shots and made 29 saves in 60 minutes of work.

With the win, St. Kate's overall record improves to 5-12-1, while the team holds a 4-6-1 in MIAC play. The Wildcats and Blazers will conclude the series on Saturday when they face off at 2 p.m. in Drake Arena.
