Softball set for showdown with St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, MINN. – In the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) preseason polls, the St. Catherine University Wildcats and the University of St. Thomas Tommies were projected to be the top two teams in the conference. On Wednesday, the conference and softball fans will see if that prediction reigns true when the two teams face each other at 3:30 p.m. at St. Thomas' field.

If the past two years are any indicator, Wednesday afternoon's double header between the Wildcats and Tommies should be one of the best doubleheaders of the season. Not counting the MIAC playoffs, St. Kate's holds a 2-2 record against the St. Thomas over the last two seasons and handed the Tommies their first conference loss of the 2016 season. Unlike last year, and 2015 for that matter, the Wildcats will have to defeat St. Thomas on the road, a place where they have never won during the regular season.

Live stats will not be available for the games, however score updates can be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five things to know before the big doubleheader:

7 – The last time the Wildcats and Tommies met was in Game 7 of the MIAC softball playoffs. After losing to St. Thomas early in the tournament, St. Kate's came back to beat the Tommies 5-4 in the first game of the championship, forcing the deciding game seven. Unfortunately, the Wildcats lost game seven 6-0 but still advanced to the NCAA tournament thanks to an at-large bid.

2 – St. Kate's was the only team in Division III to beat St. Thomas twice in 2016. The Wildcats defeated the Tommies 1-0 on April 12, 2016 in the first game of the regular season doubleheader then again in the MIAC Championship game.

4 – Junior pitcher Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) was named MIAC Pitcher-of-the-Week for the fourth time in her career on Monday after three shutout performances against Wartburg College, Saint Mary's University and St. Olaf College. In 21 innings of work, Flugstad gave up just seven hits while striking out 17 and did not allow a single run to opponents. She also threw a one-hitter against Saint Mary's on April 1 and allowed just two baserunners to reach first in a 4-0 win over St. Olaf on Sunday.

.421 – First year center field Amber Montero (Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial) hit .421 in six games last week to earn the first MIAC Player-of-the-Week honor of her career. Montero was 8-19 in the plate with three home runs in three games. She led the conference in slugging percentage (.947) during the week and is currently tied for the lead in the conference in home runs (4).

11 – St. Thomas enters Wednesday's doubleheader riding an 11-game win streak. The Tommies last loss came on March 20 when they lost to Linfield 5-0. Since then, St. Thomas has won 11-striaght games, scoring 69 total runs while giving up only seven to its opponents, and is now the No. 17 ranked team in the country.
