Career highs, school records highlight basketball's 82-48 win over Macalester

ST. PAUL, MINN. – Every so often, history gets made in the sport of college basketball. Wednesday night, fans and players alike witnessed it being made in spades, as two St. Catherine University basketball seniors made their marks in the school record book. LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn. / Humboldt) cemented herself in the St. Kate's record book as the all-time leader in points and rebounds, while Mari Lee (Dawson, Minn. / Dawson-Boyd) set a new career-high in points in the Wildcats 82-48 victory over the Scots Wednesday night.

It was clear from the beginning that St. Kate's was due for a historic night. After a tight win over Augsburg on Saturday, the Wildcats needed to get a win against Macalester in order to stay in the hunt for a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoffs. With that fact in mind, St. Kate's came out firing on all cylinders to open the game. The team shot 60% from the floor in the first and second quarters and 55% from beyond the arc, allowing the Wildcats to jump out to a 47-31 lead at halftime.

However, the moment of the game came at 3:35 in the very first quarter. St. Kate's managed to take a 13-2 lead in the first quarter, thanks to outstanding defensive play and a 13-0 scoring run. However, the Scots seemed to be finding a rhythm offensively, cutting the lead to 13-4. On the ensuring offensive possession, Holt brought the ball up the court and drove toward the basket. With seconds remaining on the shot clock, she pulled up for the off-balance jumper, which seemed to wobble a bit in midair before falling through the basket, which not only gave the Wildcats a 15-4 lead but also broke Laura Kalbfell's seven year school record for career points.

Later in the first, Holt also pulled in two of 10 defensive rebounds, breaking Jeanna Spannring's 17 year old school record for career rebounds. At the end of the game, Holt now has 1408 points and 772 rebounds in her career with St. Kate's.

Lee was quite literally perfect for the Wildcats in the opening two quarters, going 3-3 from the floor and 1-1 from the 3-point line. However, the senior forward really got hot in the second half, scoring 13 of a career high 20 points in the final 20 minutes of the game. After St. Kate's got off to a slow start coming out of half time, Lee jump started the offense by draining a huge three to put the Wildcats up 50-31.

In addition to Lee, four other players for St. Kate's scored in double-digits Wednesday night. Kennedy Jennings (Grimes, Iowa / Dallas Center-Grimes) was second on the team with 17 points, while Audra Clark (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) and Danica Cambrice (Minneapolis, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) each added 11. Alexis Garcia (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins) scored 10 in her return to the team, and Holt finished the game with seven points.

Thanks to Lee's spectacular third quarter, the Wildcats held a 67-41 lead over Macalester after 30 minutes of play. In the final quarter, St. Kate's outscored the visiting Scots 15-7, allowing the team to win the game 82-48.

With the win, the Wildcats overall record improves to 13-7 and the team holds a 7-6 mark in MIAC play. St. Kate's will return to action Saturday when it takes on the undefeated University of St. Thomas at 3 p.m. on the road.
