SUPERIOR, WIS. – After a disappointing loss in its home opener Friday night, the St. Catherine University hockey team was looking to rebound with a road win against the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday. Despite scoring the initial goal of the game, the Wildcats were unable to leave Superior, Wisconsin with a victory, as a last-minute goal lifted the Yellowjackets to a 2-1 victory.
Neither team was able to score in the first period of the game, thanks to outstanding play in net by both St. Kate's and UW-Superior goalies.
Kristen Pechacek (Park Falls, Wis. / Chequamegon) made six saves in the initial period, while the Wildcats peppered Yellowjacket starter Sky Brown with seven. While Brown made all seven saves in the initial period, she wasn't able to stop
Brede Postier's (Dodge County, Minn. / Hamline) shot at 14:08 in the second period. Postier scored off passes from
Karly Nelson (East Grand Forks, Minn. / East Grand Forks) and
Veronica Gruett (Woodbury, Minn. / Revolution) to give St. Kate's the 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, UW-Superior was able to even the score just 25 seconds later, as Kaylee Wood snuck the puck past Pechacek to tie the game 1-1. However, that was the last time either team would score until the third period, when the Yellowjackets eventually took the 2-1 lead with under three minutes remaining in regulation.
After Amanda Sergent scored at 17:15 in the third period, Head Coach
Brad Marshall pulled Pechacek from the net to give the Wildcats an extra skater. Unfortunately, St. Kate's was unable to take advantage of the 6-on-5 advantage, as the team suffered its second loss of the weekend by a final score of 2-1.
Postier's goal in the second period was her second goal of the season, and the lone goal the Wildcats scored in the loss. Nelson and
Veronica Gruett tallied the assists, while
Laken Muller (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) led the team in total shots with four.
Pechacek faced 32 shots in roughly 59 minutes of work and made 30 saves, bringing her season save total to 85.
With the loss, St. Kate's overall record falls to 1-2-0, and the team has yet to play a game in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. In fact, the Wildcats will play their conference opener next weekend, when they travel to Moorhead, Minnesota to take on the Concordia College Cobbers. Friday evening's game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday's will start at 2 p.m. Both will take place in Moorhead.
