ST. PAUL, MINN. – When the St. Catherine University soccer team took the field Tuesday afternoon, the Wildcats were looking to preserve their perfect record in several records. Not only was St. Kate's looking to improve to 4-0-0 for the first time in six years, it was also looking to start 1-0-0 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play for the first time since 2012.
Despite outshooting Carleton College throughout the game, the Wildcats and Knights ended the game in a 2-2 draw.
St. Kate's offense looked to control the game from the get go, as
Kaitlin Machovec (Woodbury, Minn. / North St. Paul) and
Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn. / Stillwater) threatened to score in the first five minutes of the game. However, despite the Wildcats strong attack, it was actually Carleton who scored first. Diana Tyutyunnyk drew St. Kate's goalkeeper
Shelby Fehringer (Andover, Minn. / Andover) away from the goal with a shot from the far left side, allowing Madeline Marker to score on the rebound at 25:47 in the first half.
Down 1-0, the Wildcat offense kicked its play into higher gear, but with under five minutes remaining in the half, it looked like St. Kate's would enter halftime down by a goal. Then, after Machovec's shot was deflected by Carleton goalkeeper Elaine Sundberg, the Wildcats were awarded a corner kick. Senior
Allie Boucher (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) blasted a goal in the top right corner above Sundberg's head, tying the game at one.
St. Kate's offense continued to roll, as the Wildcats scored immediately after the second half began. At 46:02, senior
Anna Pedersen (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) picked a good time to score her first goal of the season, an open look off a Sundberg rebound. Okerstrom assisted on the play to keep her scoring streak preserved at four straight games.
With a 2-1 lead, St. Kate's continued to put pressure on the Knights, but a foul at the 70
th minute mark proved to be costly. Carleton's Caroline Sheffield scored on a free kick through the Wildcat wall, tying the game at two with 20 minutes to play.
Throughout the rest of the half, St. Kate's continued to create scoring opportunities on offense, each time barely missing the game winning goal. Both teams were unable to score in regulation, sending the game into overtime. However, one overtime was not enough, as the score was still 2-2 after ten minutes. Still, even in the second overtime, neither team was able to score, resulting in a 2-2 double overtime tie.
With the tie to Carleton, St. Kate's opens conference play with a 0-0-1 record and is now 3-0-1 overall. The Wildcats return to the field on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game at Hamline University.
