ST. PAUL, MINN. – As October comes to an end, so too do the St. Catherine soccer and volleyball teams' respective seasons. This week marks the final week of the regular season in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) postseason soccer and volleyball tournaments start next week.
For the soccer team, this week may be the biggest of the season. After a devastating 4-2 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday, the Wildcats now find themselves in a must win situation. In order to make the MIAC postseason tournament, St. Kate's has to win its final two games of the regular season, starting with Wednesday afternoon's 3:30 p.m. game against the Saint Mary's University Cardinals.
The volleyball team also looks to end its season on a high note. After a slow start in MIAC play, the Wildcats are playing their best volleyball of the season and want to end the season with two straight conference wins. St. Kate's won its first MIAC match of the season, a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-13) sweep of Macalester, last Wednesday and pushed conference champ Augsburg College to four sets in a 3-1 loss last Saturday. The team will look to keep the ball rolling in tonight's MIAC match up against the St. Olaf College Oles, which will start at 7 p.m. in Northfield.
Soccer's home game against Saint Mary's will be the final regular season home game for the Wildcats this season. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at St. Kate's field and
live stats will be available for those who cannot attend in person.
Live stats and
video will also be available for volleyball's match against the Oles. Scoring updates for both teams will also be made on St. Kate's official Twitter account (@stkateswildcats).
With so much going on, here are the five things to know before the action starts:
7 – Currently, St. Kate's soccer team is in a three-way tie for seventh place in the conference standings, meaning this afternoon's game against Saint Mary's is a must-win if the Wildcats want to make the conference tournament. St. Kate's is currently tied with Saint Ben's and Hamline with 13 total points.
.360 – Middle hitter
Libby Kreuser (White Bear Lake, Minn. / Totino-Grace) compiled a .360 hitting percentage last week, with 22 kills and just four errors in 50 attempts. The first year compiled 11 kills in back-to-back matches, helping the Wildcats go 1-1 on the week and earn their first MIAC win of the season. Kreuser was named
Wildcat Athlete of the Week for her performances.
1 – Senior forward
Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn. / Stillwater) is one point and one point away from tying the two school records she set one year ago. Since joining the MIAC, Okerstrom holds the school record for goals (13) and points (29) in a single season. Currently, the senior has 12 goals and four assists for 28 total points, putting her within striking distance of both records.
622 – St. Kate's volleyball scores the most points in the second set, according to the stats. The Wildcats have scored 622 points in set two this season, which lead to 15 second set victories. St. Kate's is also extremely successful in the third set of matches, having scored 619 points with 15 third set victories.
2 –
