The St. Catherine University basketball team was hoping to end a six-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) losing streak in its second-to-last home game of the 2015 season. However, that would be a tall order against a Concordia College squad that entered Wednesday's contest tied for fourth in the standings. Unfortunately, the streak continued as the Wildcats fell 84-59 to the Cobbers in front of the home crowd Wednesday evening in the
Butler Center.
Early in the first half, the Wildcats appeared to be in control jumping out to a 6-0 lead. The Wildcats and Cobbers would then exchange leads until 6:13 remaining in the half when the Cobbers tied the game at 24 and went on a 15-2 run to end the half up 38-25. The Cobbers immediately began building their lead as Alley Fisher hit one of her four 3-pointers on the night to help the Cobbers en route to victory.
Despite a strong half shooting, the Wildcats couldn't come up with an answer for the Cobbers who shot 52.7 percent from the field and made 11 shots from beyond the arc. The Cobbers also dominated the boards with a 40-26 rebounding advantage, and broke down the Wildcat defense scoring 34 points in the paint.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was
Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) who collected 12 points and a game-high five steals. She also added three rebounds and an assist, while
LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn./Humboldt) was just behind with 11 points, a game-high five assists, a team-high four rebounds and two steals.
Mari Lee (Dawson, Minn./Dawson) was good for nine points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal, while
Mary Neumann (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) came off the bench for nine points after going 3-for-4 from 3-point range. She also had two rebounds, a steal and a block. Audra clark (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo) was good for seven points, three steals, two rebounds and an assist.
Three Cobbers finished in double digits including Fisher who had a game-high 21 points. Erin Janushka contributed 16 points and Olivia Johnson had 10, while Jenna Janushka had a game-high nine boards.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday for game two in the MIAC series with Augsburg College. Tip off is set for 3 p.m. in Minneapolis.
