The last win for the St. Catherine University basketball team came at home against Macalester College five weeks ago. And the Wildcats hoped they could end their nine-game skid against the same opponent – this time on the Scots' home court – and match their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win total from a year ago. Thanks to a career-first triple-double performance from
LaShay Holt (Minneapolis, Minn./Humboldt), the Wildcats used an 89-80 for their second-consecutive season sweep over the Scots Saturday afternoon in the Leonard Center in St. Paul.
Holt's sophomore campaign couldn't be much better, but she proved Saturday she had another level as she used a team-high 24 points, 11 rebounds and career-high 11 assists to lead the Wildcats to their third MIAC win of the season. Holt made two shots from beyond the arc to add to the Wildcats' 35.0 percent performance from 3-point range. Even more spectacular, Holt made an additional impact on defense with a game high six steals.
For the second time in three games, the Wildcats shot over 50 percent from the field. They also took huge advantage of the Scots 21 turnovers scoring 25 points off turnovers. However, the Scots had the advantage in rebounding 48-37 and score 46 points in the paint thanks to a game-high 33 points from Regan Fruh who went 14-of-18 from the field.
The Wildcats scored the first points of the game to take an early lead
– one they never surrendered – and were tied with the Scots just three times that occured within the first five minutes of the game. They took a 46-31 lead into the half and were up by as many as 21 points with 16:50 to play in the second half. The Wildcats then held off the Scots late-game attempt at a comeback en route to their eighth win of the season. Audra Clark (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo) was one of four Wildcats to score in double digits matching her career-high 22 points. She went 6-of-11 from the field and added nine points from the charity stripe. She also added six assists, four rebounds and a steal.
Twin sister
Meg Clark (
Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo) had a career-high day with 14 points including two buckets from beyond the arc. She went 5-of-8 from the field and completed her stat line with three steals, a game-high two blocks and one board.
Shauna Horsch (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) was again solid for the Wildcats with 15 points thanks to two 3-pointers and a 6-of-11 performance from the field. The junior also had two rebounds, one block, one assist and one steal. Kennedy Jennings (Grimes, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) had a game- and career-high 13 rebounds in addition to her six points, while
Mari Lee (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) went 4-for-6 from the field for eight points.
With the win the Wildcats move to 8-15 overall and 3-13 in the MIAC. They return to the
Butler Center Wednesday for their final home game of the season against Hamline University at 7 p.m.
