Bethel completes sweep of Wildcats with 3-0 decision

Following a tough loss at home Thursday night, the St. Catherine University hockey team looked to rebound its game two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matchup with Bethel University. Despite matching the Royals in shooting all night, the Wildcats continued to have issues finding the net and couldn't stop the Royals' attack in falling 3-0 Friday evening at the Schwans' Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota.

"It's too bad we don't have more to show for tonight's efforts," said Head Coach Brad Marshall. "We had numerous opportunities but just couldn't convert. It's disappointing that we're going into the break the way we are, which is a frustrated group."

The Wildcats and Royals were nearly even in every category except for scoring Friday. The Royals held a 22-21 shots on goal advantage and a slight lead in the faceoff category at 30-27. Each team had five opportunities on the power play, but the Wildcats couldn't captialize as opposed to the Royals who netted their first goal of the game on a power play at 12:23 off a Briita Nelson shot.

Down just 1-0, the Wildcats looked as if they may get out of the first period with a small deficit. That was until Caroline Kivisto scored with just 1:06 remaining to take a 2-0 lead over the Wildcats.

The next two periods were scoreless until the waning minutes of the game when Wendy Roberts used a set up from Lauren Kolak to add an insurance empty net goal with 28 seconds left in the game.

Abbi White (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake) stopped 19 of 21 shots that came her way, while Mallory Ryan (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and Annie Buttermore (Grant, Minn./Mahtomedi) led the Wildcats' offensively with six and five shots, respectively.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 0-7-2 on the season and 0-6-0 in the MIAC. They will take several weeks off of competition before returning in the new year for a non-conference game with Hamline University Jan. 6., 2016, at 7:30 p.m. at Drake Arena.
