Box Score 2 After opening up its spring break trip with two tough losses, the St. Catherine University softball team hoped it would fair better on day two. Thanks to a huge all around effort at the plate and on the field, the Wildcats took down SUNY-Potsdam 14-3 for their first win of the season before falling 6-0 to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Tuesday in Clermont, Fla.
Behind the strong picthing of Rachel Thompson (St. Peter, Minn.) and hitting from the entire lineup, the Wildcats claimed their first victory under new Head Coach
Colleen Powers. Rookie pitcher Thompson recorded her first collegiate win allowing just three hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts in six innings pitched on the mound for the Wildcats.
Alyssa McKee (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) highlighted the scoring in the opening game as she recorded her first home run of the season in the Wildcats' five-run fourth inning. She finished the game with two RBI and two runs scored.
Lindsey Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) had another big day at the plate for the Wildcats as she went 3-for-5 with a game-high three RBI for her first three-hit game of her career. Klein, Thompson and
Jessica Tyminski (Champlin, Minn.) each had a double to add to the power for the Wildcats, while
Alyssa Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) and
Raven Baker (Minneapolis, Minn.) each went 2-for-4 at the plate to add to the Wildcats' offensive attack. Both seniors also crossed the plate twice to add to the Wildcats' run total.
The Bears opened game one with the first run in the top of the second, but it didn't take the Wildcats long to respond scoring three runs in the third and five in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead. Potsdam looked as if it might make a comeback scoring two in the fifth inning. However, the Wildcats finally put an end to the game in the sixth scoring six more runs.
In the second game of the day, Tyminski and and Baker each picked up two hits for the Wildcats' four hits of the game. Tyminski tallied another double for her third of the season.
The Wildcats return to action in sunny Florida Tuesday against nationally-ranked No. 16 Carthage College at 12 p.m., before taking on Kalamazoo at 2 p.m.
