Wildcats' win-streak snapped with 2-0 loss to Macalester

The 2014 season has been one to remember already for the St. Catherine University soccer team having compiled the program's longest Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) winning-streak with three-straight conference victories  – and four in a row for the first time since 2010  –  to make a push for the postseason. Unfortunately, the Wildcats' saw their winning streak end there as Macalester College handed them a 2-0 loss Saturday evening under thr lights in St. Paul.

Despite heading into the contest averaging 13.8 shots per game as opposed to Macalester's 11.7, the Scots managed to outshoot the Wildcats 18-8 to control offensive play of the game.

The Wildcats' opened the game strong defensively forcing several of the Scots' opportunities wide and blocking a scoring opportunity in the 23 minute. Then, they had a little luck as Macalester's Hannah Pollard-Garber hit the crossbar just two minutes after Ellen Kokes (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) had the team's lone shot on goal in the 26th minute.

The Scots broke the scoreless tie at 34:58 when Hayley Stutzman beat Wildcat goalkeeper Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) on a set up from Pollard-Garber  – her first of two assists on the evening.

The Wildcats were down just one goal at the half, but couldn't manage to find a way to capitalize on its six shots in the second half. The Scots then sealed their win to pull ahead of the Wildcats in the conference standings when Kara Komoto scored at the 67:32 mark of the game.

Kokes and the Wildcats' leading scorer Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn./Stillwater) each recorded two shots, while Mendez picked up three saves in goal for the Wildcats.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 7-7-1 overall and 4-5 in the MIAC to drop into a tie in eighth place in the standings with Bethel University. The Wildcats hit the road again Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. contest with second-place College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, before facing Bethel to close out the regular season at home Saturday at 1 p.m. in St. Paul.
