After a week filled with cancellations and postponements, the St. Catherine University softball team was finally able to complete its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader Sunday.
The downside, though, was coming up empty-handed as Carleton College used a four-run first inning for 5-2 win in the first game before stringing together five runs in the bottom of the sixth in the late game to hand the Wildcats a 9-4 setback in Northfield, Minn.
Despite the tough losses,
Alyssa Luedtke (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) and
Jessica Tyminski (Champlin, Minn.) each had solid days at the plate with three hits a piece.
In the early game, the Wildcats faced a 5-0 deficit after allowing the Knights four early runs in the first and another in third.
But at the last possible moment, the Wildcats appeared to have life in the top of the seventh inning as
Jenna Brady (Greenfield, Minn.) picked up an RBI to send
Ashley Matthys (Elk River, Minn.) across the plate. On the same play, Luedtke scored on a Knight error to make it 5-2, but that is as close as they would make it.
Luedtke finished the first game 2-for-3 and had a walk, while Regan Kreichbaum (Faribault, Minn.) picked up a double.
The second game started in favor of the Wildcats as Tyminski hit her first of two doubles to bring Brady across the plate.
The Knights then scored two runs in the second inning to take an early 2-1 lead before Tyminski hit another RBI double to bring Brady across the plate again in the top of the third.
Immediately following Tyminski's hit,
Alyssa McKee (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) hit an RBI single to give the Wildcats the 3-2 edge.
The Knights added a run in each the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-3 lead. Luedtke scored in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4, giving the Wildcats a chance to take the second game from the Knights.
But the Wildcats' luck ran out as the Knights put together a five-inning sixth to take a 9-4 lead and shut the Wildcats out in the seventh to take the sweep.
Tyminski finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. She is currently second on the team with an impressive .417 batting average and is tied with McKee with five doubles on the season.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 8-7 on the season and open MIAC play 0-2. They are scheduled to take on Hamline University for a doubleheader Monday at Hamline University after it was postponed from a week ago. The first game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
