The College of St. Catherine hockey team played host to Chatham University this afternoon at Mariucci Arena on the U of M campus. The Wildcats were looking to get a win following a pair of losses last week at Concordia-Moorhead.
For the first time this season the Wildcats drew first blood, taking a 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the first period on a goal by Megan Boehmer (fy., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.). The goal by Boehmer was the first of three goals by first year players in today's game and the only goal of the first period.
The score was still 1-0 Wildcats until the 15:50 mark of the second when Chatham's Lauren Fishman tied the game at one. Cougar goalie Sam Hunt stopped all 13 Wildcat shots in the second and the teams went into the second intemission tied at one.
The Cougars took a 2-1 lead at the 9:44 mark of the third period but the young Wildcats battled their way back. First year player Jess Kniefel (Owatonna, Minn) tied the game with just over five minutes to play. The goal proved to be the last one scored in regulation and the game headed to overtime.
In the overtime period the Wildcats were able to draw a penalty and go on a two minute power play. Suzie Kuehnast (Fy., Willmar, Minn.) took advantage of the power play and scored the game winner off of a face-off with :48 remaining in overtime. The goals by Boehmer, Kniefel and Kuehnast were the first college of goals of their careers.
Wildcat goalie Mel Gerten (Fy., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) stopped 23 of the 25 shots she faced to get the first college win of her career.
"We showed a lot of character after we fell behind in the third period, this team did not quit when they got behind and were able to battle back and get a hard-fought win," stated Wildcat head coach Brad Marshall.
The Wildcats will be back in action this coming weekend in a pair of games against the University of St. Thomas.
