The College of St. Catherine basketball team looked to get their first win of the young season this afternoon in Lincoln, Neb. against Martin Luther. The Wildcats entered the game with a record of 0-1 following last night's loss to Coe College.
In a replay of last night's game, the Wildcats poor shooting lead to an early defecit. This time it was 7-0 Martin Luther before the Wildcats' Rachel Berglund (Sr., Dawson, Minn.) hit a jumper to make it 7-2. Following the slow start, the Wildcats found their shooting touch, scoring 14 of the next 21 points to take a two point lead. The Wildcats continued to shoot well for the remainder of the half and went into the break with a 45-26 lead.
The Wildcats shot 41.7% from the field in the first half and held MLC to just 33%. The Wildcats also made their trips to the foul line count, making 12 of 16 free throws in the first half.
The Wildcats began to find their stroke in the second half, eventually extending the lead to as much as 37 with 10 minutes still remaining. The hot shooting continued throughout the remainder of the second half eventually leading to a 98-47 win for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats shot 53.7% in the second half, including 4-9 from beyond the three point line. The Wildcats shot 48.1% for the game while turning up the pressure on the defensive end, holding their opponents to just 32.7% from the field.
Emily Wigfield* (So., Maplewood, Minn.) tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds in just 17 minutes of action. Brooke Hakanson* (Jr., Wheeler, Wis.) had 18 points and five rebounds. Berglund and Chelsie Kurtenbach also ended the game in double figures with 15 and 10 points respectively.
Berglund was also named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts.
The Wildcats will be back in action on November 28 when they host Bethel University in MIAC action.
