ST. PETER, MINN. – The St. Catherine University track and field team has made quite the impression this spring. The Wildcats have already seen several student-athletes set new personal records (PR) and crack the top-10 lists in various events this season. On Saturday, St. Kate's saw more PRs and one school record fall in its trip to the Lee Krough Invite at Gustavus Adolphus College.
In terms of strong impressions, none may have been better than
Liliya Kirkova's (Burnsville, Minn. / Burnsville). The first year broke the school record in the 200 meter dash Saturday afternoon with a personal best time of 26.10 and was the second-fastest Division III sprinter in the race. Kirkova also put together an outstanding performance in the 100 meter dash. The first year finished seventh in the race overall, and her prelim time of 12.74 is both a PR and the fourth fastest time in program history.
Kirkova wasn't the only sprinter to find success on the track. All five sprinters who competed in the 200 meter dash scored a personal best time. After Kirkova,
Megan Thoemke (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) was the next highest finisher for St. Kate's, with a time of 27.65. Thoemke also found success in the 400 meter run, as she was the second-highest finisher from Division III with a time of 1:02.82.
Sydia Reeves (Vadnais Heights, Minn. / North St. Paul),
Kanani Asuncion (Rochester, Minn. / Century) and
Ici Kelley (Robbinsdale, Minn. / St. Louis Park) also ran PR times in the 200 meter dash. Reeves finished the race with a time of 28.31 while Asuncion was right on her heels with a time of 28.43. Kelley's time of 30.29 was a PR by almost a full second. Reeves also tied her PR in the 100 meter dash while Kelley set a new PR time in the same race.
The Wildcat throwers also found plenty of success in their respective events, including senior
Megan Pohlmann (Grey Eagle, Minn. / Long Prairie-Grey Eagle). Pohlmann won the javelin event and threw over 40 meters for the first time all season at the Lee Krough Invite. Pohlmann's final throw of 40.85 meters allowed her to win the competition, as the second place finisher threw the spear just 36.86 meters.
Kaylea Hoenigschmidt (Ramsey, Minn. / Anoka) and
Katelyn Byers-Carter (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) both continued to show consistency in the hammer throw. Hoenigschmidt threw 40 meters for the third consecutive week, finishing the event in 12
th with a mark of 40.82 meters. Byers-Carter finished in 19
th with her mark of 38.02 meters. The senior was also strong in shot put, as she finished sixth with her throw of 11.44 meters.
Johna Radke (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego) tied her season best performance in high jump, as she finished in a tie for fifth place with a mark of 1.50 meters.
St. Kate's will return to competition on April 21, when several Wildcats will compete at the St. Olaf Manitou Classic in Northfield, Minnesota. The team will also compete at Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, April 22.
