NORTHFIELD, MINN. – The St. Catherine University track and field team is getting hot at just the right time. Two weeks before the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships, the Wildcats once again put together season best and personal best performances, this time at two different meets, the St. Thomas Showcase and Carleton Meet of Hearts.
The Wildcats once again had several student-athletes put together personal records (PR) at the Carleton Meet of Hearts Saturday afternoon. St. Kate's 4x200 meter team of
Liliya Kirkova (Burnsville, Minn. / Burnsville),
Liza Leja (Abrams, Wis. / Oconto Falls),
Sydia Reeves (Vadnais Heights, Minn. / North St. Paul) and Shakeela Weels-Johnson (St. Paul, Minn. / Harding) were spectacular Saturday afternoon, as they found their way into the St. Kate's record books. The four teammates finished the race in 1:49.65, which is the eighth fastest time in program history.
Wells-Johnson also had a spectacular day as an individual, with two season best performances in the 55 and 200 meter dashes. The senior took second in the 55 with a season best time of 7.32 while her time of 27.35 in the 200 meter dash was also a season best. Leja and Reeves were also spectacular in their respective sprint events. Leja made the finals of the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.95 while Reeves scored a PR in the 200 with a time of 29.98.
Megan Thoemke (White Bear Lake, Minn. / Mahtomedi) was another sprinter to record a season best time at Carleton, only hers came in the 400 meter dash. Thoemke finished the race in 62.76 seconds, which allowed her to score a point toward St. Kate's overall team score.
Michelle Perri (Plymouth, Minn. / Osseo) and
Shannon Strickland (Rochester, Minn. / Lourdes) recorded PR times in two different middle distance events. Perri broke 2:40 for the first time in her career in the 800 with a time of 2:36.86, while Strickland finished the 600 in 1:48.48.
The Wildcats were just as spectacular in the field events.
Katelyn Byers-Carter (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) continued to impress in her senior season with yet another PR throw in the shot put. Byers-Carter finished second in the event with a throw of 11.75 meters, the fifth best throw in program history.
Megan Pohlmann (Grey Eagle, Minn. / Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) was also impressive with a second place finish in the weight throw.
The Wildcats also had several student athletes compete Friday evening at the St. Thomas Showcase. Long jumper
Tori Thompson (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall) was the highest finisher from Division III at the meet with a final jump of 5.03 meters. She took third in the event behind St. Cloud State's Patience Yalartai and unattached jumper Ashley Ramacher.
Leighlin Ahlstrom (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) recorded a PR in the 3000 meter run and once again found her way into the St. Kate's record book. Her time of 10:51.44 was a personal and season best time and is also No. 5 all-time in St. Kate's history.
Allison Monahan (Missoula, Mont. / Hellgate) scored a PR in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:33.59, while
Bryana Waage  (Valencia, Calif. / Hart) carded a PR in the 5000 meter run with a time of 19:52.80.
St. Kate's will compete in one final meet before the MIAC Championships at St. Olaf on Friday, February 17.
