INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA. – It was no secret that
Robyn Rohr (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North) had a fantastic senior campaign with the St. Catherine University softball team. After a season for the ages, where she broke seven school records and earned multiple accolades for her play, Rohr has been nominated for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Woman of the Year honor, the NCAA announced Tuesday morning.
The nomination is yet another achievement for Rohr, who won multiple awards at the conclusion of the 2016 softball season. The senior was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Softball Player-of-the-Year after leading the conference in multiple statistical categories, including batting average, on base percentage, runs, and hits. Rohr also earned All-Conference honors for the second time in her career, was named First Team All-Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), and received the St. Catherine McCahill Athlete of the Year award.
In addition to her various accolades, Rohr made her mark in the St. Kate's record board by breaking seven school records. At the end of the 2016 regular season, Rohr held the school records in both career and single season batting average, career and single season runs, single season walks, single season doubles, and consecutive game hit streak. Rohr also found her way into the national record books, as her 41 game hit streak is the second longest in Division III and tied for third longest streak in the history of the NCAA. Thanks to Rohr's stellar play, the Wildcats finished the season with their best overall record in program history (34-11) and reached the MIAC Tournament Championship Game and Regional Final in their first trip to both the MIAC and NCAA Tournaments.
Rohr also made several contributions to St. Kate's as an American Sign Language Interpreting Major by working to make games accessible for all students.
Rohr is one of 169 Division III student-athletes and 10 MIAC individuals nominated for the prestigious honor. Over the summer, the MIAC will evaluate and select two of the nominees to submit to the Woman of the Year selection committee. From these submissions, the selection committee will select the top 30 indidivuals, 10 from each division, before picking the top three from each division to make up the nine finalists. The winner of the NCAA Woman of the Year honor will be announced in October of 2016.
The NCAA Woman of the Year award was established in 1991 and looks to honor the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of a graduating female student-athlete in any of the three divisions. Exactly 517 student-athletes were nominated across all divisions, the most ever in the history of the Woman of the Year program.
