ResultsST. PAUL, MINN. – After waiting out the cold and snow on Saturday, the St. Catherine University track and field team was ready to return to competition in their home state. With one week off to recoup from the trip, the St. Kate's track and field athletes put together some of the best performances of their careers at the Hamline Invite.
The Wildcats put together several top performances in the field events. Thrower
Megan Pohlmann (Grey Eagle, Minn. / Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) put together a personal best performance in the javelin throw. The junior threw 39.83 meters in the event finals, setting a new personal best distance and taking second behind Carleton's Trish Hare.
Her teammates Daniella Breault (Anoka, Minn. / Anoka) and
Alyssa Besch (Apple Valley, Minn. / Eastview) also performed well in the javelin event. Breault took sixth after throwing a career best 35.19 meters in the finals while Besch took third behind a 38.44 meter performance.
First year
Kaylea Hoenigschmidt also had a career day in multiple events. In the women's hammer throw, Hoenigschmidt took tenth before a PR throw of 38.36 meters, just barely missing the top-10 mark. Then, in the women's discus, Hoenigschmidt set another personal record. She finished thirteenth in the event after throwing a personal best 31.29 meters in the final round.
Tori Thompson (Rochester, Minn. / Rochester Mayo) continued her strong first year with the St. Kate's track and field team. She took sixth in the discuss competition behind a throw of 34.27 meters. The throw was a PR for Thomspon and was just a few ticks away from being the No. 10 distance in school history.
On the tracks, the Wildcat distance runners continued to turn in quality performances.
Rachel Hall (Mendota Heights, Minn.) picked up right where she left off at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships. The junior set PRs and recorded top-10 times in both the 800 and 1500 meter races for the Wildcats. In the 800, Hall shaved nearly two seconds off her previous career best time to finish the race in 2:23.11, the No. 7 time in St. Kate's history. Hall was just as impressive, if not more, in the 1500, where she took eighth behind a career best performance. Her final time of 4:55.98 was the No. 4 time in school time.
Marie Morrier (Hudson, N.H. / Academy of Science and Design) made her debut in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The sophomore middle distance runner finished the race in 12:34.86 to take sixth and record a personal best performance.
Megan Thoemke (White Bear Lake, Minn. / Mahtomedi) was the top performer for the Wildcats in the sprints. The sophomore set a PR in the 200 meter dash, finishing the race in 27.89 seconds to take twentieth. She also had a season best performance in the 400 meter dash, taking ninth with a final time of 1:01.38.
St. Kate's hopes to continue their strong performances in their upcoming meets, especially next weekend. The Wildcats will travel to Saint John's in Collegeville, Minnesota for the Saint John's Invitational next Saturday, April 9. St. Kate's will return to the cities to compete in the Holst Invitational on Concordia-St. Paul's campus on April 16.
