NORTHFIELD, MINN. – The St. Catherine University track and field team's strong season continued Friday evening at the St. Olaf Manitou Classic in Northfield, Minnesota. The Wildcats recorded three top-10 performances this week, while multiple athletes set personal records in the meet that featured only women's teams.
Junior
Courtney Kirkeide (Greenbush, Minn. / Greenbush-Middle River) recorded not only her season best performance in the 5000 meter run, but her career best performance as well. Kirkeide finished the race in 18:53.25, which was 14 seconds faster than her previous PR of 19:07.41 and good enough for fourth place. She also recorded a top-10 performance, as her time at the Manitou Classic is now the sixth fastest time in St. Kate's history.
Tori Thompson (Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) continued her impressive first year with the Wildcats with quality finishes in the long jump and discuss events. The first year won the long jump competition behind a jump of 5.17 meters, which was .06 meters longer than the runner up from the College of Saint Benedict. Thompson was also impressive in the discus events. After two weeks of knocking on the door of the top-10 performance list, Thompson finally broke through with an impressive through of 38.25 meters. That mark is the No. 6 performance in St. Kate's history and a person record for Thompson in the event.
Distance runner
Rachel Hall (Mendota Heights, Minn.) recorded yet another top-10 time in St. Kate's history, only this time, it was in the 400 meter dash. Hall finished the dash in 59.79 seconds, which is No. 7 on St. Kate's performance list and Hall's new PR.
The Wildcats continued to have one of the best seasons in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in the javelin throw. St. Kate's swept the top three spots behind strong performances from
Megan Pohlmann (Grey Eagle, Minn. / Long Prairie-Grey Eagle),
Alyssa Besch (Apple Valley, Minn. / Eastview), and Danielle Breault (Anoka, Minn. / Anoka). Pohlmann won the event behind a throw of 40.38 meters, while Besch and Breault took second and third respectively. Breault set a personal record in the event behind a throw of 35.61 meters.
Kaylea Hoenigschmidt (Ramsey, Minn. / Anoka) was strong for St. Kate's in both the discus and the hammer throw. The first year set a PR in both events behind a 31.34 meter throw in the discus and a 39.03 meter throw in the hammer event. She also took sixth in the hammer behind athletes from Minnesota State Mankato, the University of St. Thomas, and St. Olaf College.
The Wildcats also found success in the 200 meter dash.
Brittany Moore (Maplewood, Minn. / North St. Paul) took .36 seconds off her seeded time to finish the race in 27.74 seconds.
Sydia Reeves (Vadnais Heights, Minn. / North St. Paul) and
Maita Lee (Little Canada, Minn. / Roseville) also had good performances for St. Kate's, running the 200 meters in 29.67 and 31.56 seconds respectively.
With strong performances in Northfield, St. Kate's will look against to next weekend, when they travel to neighboring Macalester College to participate in the Janis Rider Invitational. Then, the Wildcats will take part in the Tommie Twilight at St. Thomas before the MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 13 and 14.
