COLLEGEVILLE, MINN. – The St. Catherine University records continue to fall during the outdoor track and field season. This time, it was the javelin throw record that was toppled by junior thrower Megan Pohlmann (Grey Eagle, Minn. / Long Prairie-Grey Eagle). Pohlmann was one of several Wildcat athletes to record a personal best performance at the Saint John's Invitational in Collegeville, Minnesota on Sunday.
In her first meet of the event, the javelin throw, Pohlmann wasted no time setting the school record once it was her turn in the runway. Her first throw travelled 41.38 meters, breaking the St. Kate's record that was set at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships last season by her teammate Alyssa Besch (Apple Valley, Minn. / Eastview). The throw also travelled the farthest of any in the event, and Pohlmann easily took first in the event that featured 12 other MIAC competitors. Pohlmann's performance in javelin on Sunday was not only one of the best in the conference, but in the nation as well. Pohlmann's throw is ranked in the top-10 in all of Division III and is one of the top two throws in the MIAC this outdoor season.
Both Besch and Danielle Breault (Anoka, Minn. / Anoka) had strong performances in the javelin as well. Besch took fourth with a top throw of 35.45 meters while Breault finished just one place behind her teammate. She took fifth in the event with a final throw of 33.90 meters.
Tori Thompson (Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) continued her impressive first season with the track and field team. The first year took sixth in the discuss throw behind a personal best performance of 34.30 meters. She also tied for fifth in long jump and finished ninth in the 200 meter dash behind a personal best time of 27.85 seconds.
The rest of the St. Kate's throwers were strong in their events as well. Junior Katelyn Byers-Carter (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) took twelfth in the shot put with a personal best final throw of 10.23 meters. First year Kaylea Hoenigschmidt (Ramsey, Minn. / Anoka) was also strong in the discuss event with a PR performance of 30.24 meters.
St. Kate's track and field team hopes to continue their top performances in their upcoming meet. Weather pending, St. Kate's will compete in the Concordia Holst Invitational next Saturday on the Concordia-St. Paul campus. The meet is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
