ST. PAUL, MINN. – So far this fall, the St. Catherine University athletics teams have found incredible success at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships. Saturday afternoon, St. Kate's cross country team kept that trend alive with the best team finish in over ten years. The Wildcats took sixth at the MIAC Women's Cross Country Championships, the second-best finish in program history behind the team's fifth place finish in 1998.
All around, it was a historic day for St. Kate's, who had three runners finish in the top-30 for the first time in program history.
Rachel Hall (Mendota Heights, Minn.) became the first Wildcat to win All-MIAC honors since Ailee Larson in 2013 with a 15
th place finish and a time of 23:45.2.
Leighlin Ahlstrom (White Bear Lake, Minn. / White Bear Lake) continued to impress in her first season with the Wildcats. Ahlstrom earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors with an impressive 17th place finish and a time of 23:47.9.
Courtney Kirkeide (Greenbush, Minn. / Greenbush-Middle River) just missed earning All-Conference Honorable Mention honors for the first time in her career but still clocked her best finish ever at the MIAC Championship. Kirkeide was the third finisher for St. Kate's at the meet with an impressive 26
th place finish with a time of 24:07.3.
Shannon Strickland (Rochester, Minn. / Loudres) earned 66 points as the fourth finisher for the Wildcats. The senior ended her MIAC Championships career with a time of 25:28.3 and an 88
th place finish.
Not far behind Strickland was St. Kate's fifth finisher
Bryana Waage (Valencia, Calif. / Hart). Waage finished her outstanding season by earning 67 points with a top-100 finish at the race. Waage finished the 6k course in 25:29.8 to round out the Wildcats top-5 finishers.
Jackie Brine-Doyle (Merrifield, Minn. / Pequot Lakes) and
Michelle Perri (Plymouth, Minn. / Osseo) rounded out St. Kate's top seven. Brine-Doyle finished the course in a time of 25:50.6 for her sixth consecutive top-seven finish. Perri also broke through the top seven for the first time all season with a time of 26:11.0.
After combining the scores of the top-five runners, St. Kate's finished with 191 total points and an average time of 24:32. The University of St. Thomas won the meet overall as a team with 50 points while Augsburg's Taybri Irving was the top individual runner, winning the race with a time of 22:32.5.
The impressive season isn't over for the Wildcats yet. The top-seven runners will compete at the NCAA Regionals, which will take place on November 12 in Northfield, Minnesota.
