Wildcats open 2016 with standout performances at Maclester

Results

ST. PAUL, Minn.---After months of training and anticipation, the St. Catherine University track and field team finally had its first opportunity to test its talent for the 2016 season at the Macalester College Tri-Meet. The Wildcats turned in a handful or personal record (PR) performances, first-place finishes and one St. Kate's top 10 time to kick off the indoor schedule Saturday at the Leonard Center. 

Courtney Kirkeide (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) grabbed the Wildcats' first top 10 performance of the year as she finished third in the 3,000-meter run. Her time of 11:10.31 was a new PR for the junior and is No. 9 all-time at St. Kate's. 

Sprinting duo Shakeela Wells-Johnson (St. Paul, Minn./Harding) and Brittany Moore (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) dominated with each gabbing a first-place finish. Wells-Johnson opened her junior year with a time of 8:08 to win the 60-meter dash, while Moore clocked a time of 9.81 to capture victory in the 60-meter hurdles. Senior Moore also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.82 and third in the 60-meter dash (8.30). 

Megan Thoemke (White Bear Lake, Minn./Mahtomedi) also had a strong opening meet in the sprints as well placing second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 64.86. She also was fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.58. 

Michelle Perri (Plymouth, Minn./Osseo) recorded PRs in both the mile run and 800-meter run. In the mile, Perri improved by 24 seconds with a time of 5:43.95 that was the top time by any Division III competitors and second overall. She also placed fourth in the 800-meter event with a PR time of 2:41.22. 

Ellie Cardinal (Burnsville, Minn./Eastview) also had a strong finish in the mile run recording a PR time of 5:55.60.

First-year Kaylea Hoenigschmidt (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) made a solid collegiate debut finishing first in the shot put with a mark of 9.85 meters (32-3.75). 

The Wildcats will return to action next Saturday as they head to River Falls, Wisconsin, for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcon Winter Classic at 11 a.m.
