Track and field opens 2015 with strong all-around performances at Macalester Tri Meet

Results

After a nearly a month of practice the St. Catherine University track and field team was looking forward to finally getting a competitive teast in the 2015 indoor season. Against strong Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) competition Macalester and Augsburg Colleges, the Wildcats turned in solid all-around performances at the Macalester Triangular Meet Saturday afternoon in St. Paul.

Leading the Wildcats with several strong performances was Brittany Moore (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul). The junior sprint specialist made her debut in the long jump and finished second with a mark of 4.95 meters (16-3.0). Her mark was also good enough for No. 5 on the St. Kate's all-time performance list. She then followed up her impressive jump debut by winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.63 that was just off her career-best school record mark of 9.27.

Moore also anchored the Wildcat 4 x 400 meter relay squad that finished second with a time of 4:23.73. She was helped by first-year Megan Thomke (White Bear Lake, Minn./Mahtomedi) in her collegiate debut, as well as solid cross country performers Shannon Strickland (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) and Marie Morrier (Hudson, N.H./Academy for Science and Design.

Makayla Skluzacek (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) was just off her personal record (PR) marks in both the long jump and high jump events. She was third behind Moore in the long jump with a jump of 4.56 meters (14-11.5). She also captured a first-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.47 meters (4-9.75).

Abby Palmer (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) was just behind Skluzacek in her collegiate debut in the long jump with a mark of 4.55 meters (14-11.25), before running an 8.91 in her first collegiate appearance in the 60-meter dash.

Thomke and Morrier also participated in the long jump for the first time jumping 4.41 meters (14-5.75) and 4.28 (14-0.5), respectively. Thomke also ran 28.94 in the 200-meter dash, while Morrier finished the 400-meter dash in 1:06.40. Ellie Cardinal (Burnsville, Minn./Eastview) also debuted in the 400-meter with a time of 1:11.39.

Strickland and Jenna McElroy (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) anchored the Wildcats in the distance events as Strickland was just over a second off her PR in the mile clocking in at 5:45.97. McElroy won the 3,000-meter run with a solid time of 11:26.28. Michelle Perri (Plymouth, Minn./Osseo) debuted in the mile with a time of 6:20.90, while Emily Hohenshell (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) debuted in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:45.22.

In weight throw, Megan Pohlmann (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) was a solid performer besting her previous mark by over a meter with a throw of 11.02 meters (36-2.0). Claire Vasilis (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) made her collegiate debut in the same event with a throw of 10.41 meters (34-2.0).

The Wildcats return to action next week traveling across the border to UW-River Falls for an invite meet Saturday scheduled for 11 a.m. in River Falls, Wisconsin.
