After a successful first race in a dual meet with the College of Saint benedict two weeks ago, the St. Catherine University cross country team hoped to have a strong weekend in its first 6k race of the season. Thanks to several personal record (PR) times from several returners and solid times from a few first-years, the Wildcats placed third as a team – and just seven points from second
– with
Mariah Stout (Bellvue, Idaho/Wood River) finishing in the top-10 Saturday morning at the UW-River Falls Falcon Invitational in River Falls, Wisconsin.
Stout was the first Wildcat to cross the line with a time of 24:01.5 to finish ninth overall. The first-year also found herself a spot on the Wildcat top-25 all-time performance list with the seventh-fastest time in school history in just her first collegiate 6k race. She anchored the Wildcat squad that collected 67 points and finished third of six team including schools from both the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
Just behind Stout was senior
Jenna McElroy (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) who proved she is already in top form this year as she nearly matched her PR time with a 13th-place finishing of 24:21.3. Her time is now No. 10 all-time at St. Kate's.
The third Wildcat finisher was
Marie Morrier (Hudson, N.H./Academy for Science and Design) who was just six seconds behind McElroy with a time of 24:27.8. Her time was good enough for a 15th-place finish in her first collegiate invite and takes over the No. 13 spot all-time at St. Kate's.
After a solid rookie seasons,
Shannon Strickland (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Lourdes) and
Courtney Kirkeide (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) returned in top form
– both placing in the Wildcat top-25 at No. 15 and 20, respectively. Strickland clocked in with a PR time of 24:28.7 to finish 16th, while Kirkeide was just behind with a PR of 24:36.6 to finish 19th.
Fellow returner Christine McKenna (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Northern University HS) also had a solid race for the Wildcats with a PR of 25:20.1 to finish in the top-40, while newcomer Rachel Hall (Mendota Heights, Minn.) just missed placing in the top-50 at 26:27.4 as the seventh Wildcat finisher.
The Wildcats return to action in two weeks at the University of Minnesota Roy Griak Meet at the U of M golf course in St. Paul. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Wildcats on TwitterWildcats on FacebookWildcat Cross Country on Facebook
