Box Score After suffering a tough loss despite having an early lead over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) leader Augsburg College Saturday, the St. Catherine University soccer team hoped it could pull above .500 with a win against Crown College on the road.
And fortunately for the Wildcats, the offense found life against the Storm as they strung together five goals to earn a shut out victory to pull ahead to 6-5-0 on the season Tuesday evening in St. Bonafacius, Minn.
The Wildcats put together one of their best team performances as four different players recorded goals and six recorded points in the victory. The team collectively had 29 total shots with 16 making it to the goal and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior
Lensa Gurmessa (Minneapolis, Minn.) continued to fuel the St. Catherine offense when she netted the eventual game winner just 3:56 into the game. She would eventually add an assist to record her fourth multiple-point game of the season and bump her season point total to 16 which is tied for sixth-most in the MIAC.
After Gurmessa got the Wildcats on the board, junior
Sarah Anderson (Marshalltown, Iowa) scored her second goal of the season
– and first of two on the night
– just over four minutes later on a pass from
Allison Hawkins (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead they would hold until halftime.
After the break, the excitement continued to build for the Wildcats as first-year
Kelly Molitor (Lakeville, Minn.) recorded her first collegiate goal in the 57th minute on a pass from
Elena Jimenez (Eagan, Minn.). Molitor has now recorded three points during her rookie campaign with the Wildcats.
Less than 10 minutes later, Anderson would score her second goal of the game to increase the Wildcats' lead to four. Anderson finished the game with four points and is now fourth on the team in points (6). This was also the second two-goal game during Anderson's two seasons as a Wildcat.
The final goal for the Wildcats came when
Nina Bukowski (Two Harbors, Minn.) scored her fourth goal in the last six games to seal the five-goal victory. Bukowski remains second in points for the Wildcats with 12 which is tied for 11th in the MIAC.
In goal, junior
Abbey Hinton (St. Paul, Minn.) recorded one save to pick up her second shutout win of the season.
The Wildcats return to MIAC action Saturday when they travel to Winona, Minn., to take on a winless Saint Mary's University squad at 1 p.m.
