The St. Kate's softball team split their doubleheader with Macalester today. The Wildcats dropped game one 4-3 before coming back to win game two 3-0. The Wildcats are now 9-5 in conference play and 10-16 overall heading into their final week of the regular season.
In the opening game St. Kate’s and Macalester staged an exciting back and forth game. The Wildcats put up one run in the first and one in the second to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth Macalester tied the game at two. St. Kate’s quickly responded with a run in top of the fifth when Jessi McGehee doubled to bring in Andrea Boser. Macalester again responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. That is where the scoring ended though, and the Wildcats ended up on the short end of the 4-3 game.
Boser and Jessica Kniefel each went 2-for-4 and scored a run. McGehee went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIS.
In game two Tianna Allen (6-8) pitched the first shutout of her collegiate career. She held the Scots to seven hits and struck out six in seven innings of work.
Offensively the Wildcats only had one more hit then the Scots, but they took full advantage of those scoring opportunities. They scored one run in the second, third and fourth innings to give Allen all the run support she would need.
Kniefel again went 2-for-4, as did Lisa Jacobs. Boser had an RBI double in the third and Jenna Clark went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
The Wildcats now find themselves in fifth place in the MIAC with four conference series’ left to be played. Next up St. Kate’s will host St. Mary’s at 1pm on Saturday April 18.
