Soccer & VB set to host cancer awareness events
Bookmark and Share
On Wednesday October 28, The St. Kate's soccer and volleyball teams will be helping to raise funds and awareness for cancer research during their final home games of the season.

The soccer team will be sporting pinks socks and the game will be played with pink soccer balls. They team will also be selling t-shirts and accepting donations with all proceeds going towards breast cancer research.  Their "Kick for Cancer" 2009 event is part of a national program that involves hundreds of participating college and high school teams during the month. The aim is to promote breast cancer awareness and education and help raise money for continued research.

While the proceeds of this event will go toward breast cancer, cancer awareness has special meaning to the Wildcats soccer team this season. The Wildcats have been without the services of Ashley Whiting all season long as she strives to overcome her battle with neuroendocrine cancer.  Whiting, who was a letter winner in soccer and track and field at St. Kate's during her first year, has been unable to rejoin the team this fall as she stays at home in Iowa City, Iowa for treatment.

As Coach Bellis noted, "Without doubt we have missed Ashley both on and off the field. She has a personality that glows, and an enthusiasm for the game and her teammates that is hard to replicate.
Our thoughts are with Ashley as she continues to battle her illness."

While the soccer team is battling Carleton, the volleyball team will be hosting #16 ranked St. Ben's for their annual "Dig Pink" event.

The t-shirt sales and donations will continue to be accepted for this national event as well.  The match is set to begin at 7:00 pm.

Fans are all encouraged to wear pink and check out the Susan G. Komen website for more information.
