St. Kate’s basketball continued their winning ways, defeating St. Mary’s 67-57 Saturday afternoon in Winona after an impressive second half performance.
The Wildcats were tied 24-24 with the Cardinals with 5:03 remaining in the first half before St. Mary’s took a 5 point lead with just over 2 minutes remaining. But Laura Kalbfell helped tie the score again with a layup and a three pointer with just 14 seconds on the clock. St. Mary’s hit a three pointer of their own as the buzzer sounded to take a 33-30 halftime lead.
The lead changed hands numerous times in the second half until Kalbfell put in a pair of free throws to put the Wildcats up by one, 52-51. St. Kate’s would never look back as they forced the Cardinals into missed shots and made key rebounds and free throws down the stretch to seal the ten point victory.
Kalbfell finished with 23 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Molly Peterson with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Megan Zillmer and Jenna Olson each finished with 7 points.
The win brings St. Kate’s record to 8-10 in the MIAC, 9-12 overall.
The Wildcats play at Carleton on February 10th and return home to play Hamline on Saturday, February 13th at 3:00 pm at Butler Center.
